The Online Degree HR Professionals Need
Q: How did you feel at the start of the program versus today? What were your expectations? Were they met, exceeded or changed?
A: I was actually a little nervous! I finished a master’s degree in 2008, but I really hadn’t taken any formal courses since then, and it takes a little while to get back into the routine of being a student. The coursework is challenging, and I like that.
Plus, technology has come a long way. We’re now using Zoom for the live classes, and it’s nice to have face-to-face interactions with the professor and students through the system’s video capabilities.
Before starting the program, I thought I had a pretty good grasp of employment law. I’ve come to realize that I only had a basic understanding. The online Master of Jurisprudence in Labor & Employment Law program gives students a whole new level of depth and detail. I’ve learned a tremendous amount in my first two semesters, and I’m really looking forward to the next four.
Q: What are some skills you learned through the program that you now use in your career?
A: In my work as a human resources (HR) consultant, I’m routinely asked to help clients develop policies, procedures and employee handbooks. I also have conducted a number of workplace investigations.
The program has helped me to have a better understanding of the law. I’m able to use this knowledge to advise and guide my clients in an appropriate, legal and non-discriminatory direction while balancing the needs of the organization and the employees.
Q: Why would you recommend Tulane University’s online MJ-LEL program?
A: During my career in HR, I’ve noticed that each year, we add more and more federal and state employment laws. It’s become increasingly important for HR professionals to understand the law. This Master of Jurisprudence program helps me to feel confident in my employment law knowledge so that I can better assist my clients.
Q: What course or feature did you enjoy most about the program?
A: Jennifer Cooper and other faculty genuinely care about their students. I’ve really enjoyed learning from all of them. All of the courses that I’ve taken so far have been beneficial to me.
I’m really excited for this semester’s courses in employment law and intellectual property (IP) in the workplace.
Q: What does earning a degree from Tulane truly mean to you?
A: Tulane Law School has an excellent reputation. I had been looking for a program like this for a few years and was thrilled that it was being offered by a premier university. This degree will boost my professional credibility, and clients are already impressed that I’m taking classes in this discipline.
Q: As a current student, what tips or advice would you give to someone who is entering the online program?
A: Make sure that you have the time to devote to the program. It’s a commitment, like any type of postsecondary education, but it’s doable if you’re committed to the program and the process.
